When I was in elementary school, of course I learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I learned about his speech, his mission and his goals. Included in these lessons were his supporters, Rosa Parks (May she Rest in Peace) and his own loving wife, Coretta Scott King. My family and I would go every year to the Martin Luther King Jr. parade held downtown by the boats. It was beautiful; wonderful mornings; sunshine, birds, boats and the community of San Diego, Calif.
Since then, I have then moved out of California to Atlanta, Georgia, where the legend and legacy lives, it has been a major difference. I guess, when one is a native of Georgia, he receives more recognition. Although, he did receive recognition from all over because of his fight and drive to make a better life for all. In Atlanta, they celebrate his legacy in other ways. Of course there was a parade, my university, Clark Atlanta held a handful of events for students to participate in; community service. Many organizations are also participating in community service events. My brother spent his weekend in Tennessee and he mentioned how many people were out and about doing things to celebrate as well.
Now, years later, we have President-elect Barack H. Obama, who is here creating HISTORY similar to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He's here for CHANGE, which is what this country needs, but while also serving as the 44th president and the 1st African-American president, he's already achieved his goal. Now, he's off to aspire towards nationwide goals.
With the inauguration less that 24 hours away, I am excited to officially say "my president is black!" I do not doubt President Obama will not succeed, I think he's the best man and goal-oriented candidate for this position. But, mark my words, "HE WILL PROVE IT!!"
HISTORY has been made and will continue to be made!
